A figure of speech.

Inspired by a conversation last Friday at our MA paper group, I recently dusted off my copy of Sound and Sense — a marvelous book if ever one existed — to get a little refresher on my figurative language terms. Looking at all my marginalia from AP English with Mr. Pascone my junior year in high school, rereading all the poetry, remembering the classroom with its old slate chalkboard and tablet armchairs — all these things fill me with warmth and joy. It sends me to other books I love, flipping to familiar pages and paragraphs, treasuring perfect sentences and stanzas. As I struggle through the last, most difficult section of my MA paper, it’s good to take the time to remember what I love about writing: the pleasure of a well-crafted sentence, a well-told story.
