Doggerel.

Written on the inside cover of a UW Library copy of John Dewey’s The Public and Its Problems, 1946 edition:

I’m proud to be an American
I’m happy to be free
But I wish I was a dog
And Nixon a tree

Now how’s that for a little bit of history?
