Making CSAs affordable.

I was thrilled to hear this story on Maine Things Considered today about how the city of Belfast, ME, has encouraged local banks to offer CSA savings accounts that allow local people to set aside money to save up for purchasing a Community Supported Agriculture share with an area farm at the beginning of the growing season. This is a great idea that will make CSAs more broadly affordable. Because they require a big up-front expenditure, CSAs are sometimes not doable for people who would like to participate; making it easy to save up for them is a wonderful way to assure broader access. This seems to me to be a wonderful example about local interests working together for the health of the community, in all its senses.
